A complete resource for teachers that contains background material, case studies, student activities and handouts ready for use in the school setting. A useful resource to develop the inquiry questions 3 and 4 of the Overview. Consists of three units:

  • Unit 1: What is governance?
  • Unit 2: Governance: Who is involved?
  • Unit 3: Different forms of governance

Mellor, D and Haebich, A., Many Voices - Reflections on experiences of Indigenous child separation, National Library of Australia, 2003.

Indigenous community members, those who fostered or adopted children, policy makers, administrators, and others have shared their individual experiences about the removal of children from their families. This publication, including a CD of excerpts from oral histories, assist readers to understand the complex layers of this aspect of Australia’s story. Migration Museum (1995) From Many Places, Wakefield Press, Adelaide.

A source which provides information on each cultural group that has immigrated to South Australia which states their place of origin, history in South Australia, settlement, community involvement and bibliography for further information. Could be used as a starting point for further analysis of groups of immigrants in Australia

Pyne, Bowe & Connolly, One Land Many Stories, A history of Australia in the 20 th Century, Longman-Pearson Education, Education Australia Pty Ltd., Melbourne, 2001.

Focus: on social and political history from 1901 to the present, with emphasis on issues such as migration and multiculturalism, indigenous issues, feminism, egalitarianism, republicanism.

Streetwise Comics (2001) Losin’ It and Against the Odds, Gamblers Rehabilitation Fund, Australian Hotels Association, Clubs SA and the South Australian Government (Human Services Dept)

Comic booklets which deal with two ‘real life’ situations dealing with the impact of gambling on family and friends.

Contains some excellent extracts suitable for student use. For example, chapters on sex equality, race equality, role of sport, etc.

The AEC can provide resources, guest speakers, and excursion opportunities for students in the areas of democracy and responsible citizenship?

Education sessions are held at the Electoral Education Centre. It is open Monday-Thursday, and runs three sessions a day, focusing on topics such as Democracy, Three Levels of Government, Referendums and Behind the Scenes at a Federal Election.

They also run professional development for teachers during school holidays.
