Indigenous Resources List

 

There are unlimited biographical writings by many Aboriginal people from all walks of life and from different time periods. Comprehensive lists of these can be obtained from library databases, the internet, publishing lists, etc. The following is a collection suggested resources and certainly not an exhaustive list.

Huggins, Rita and Jackie, Auntie Rita, Aboriginal Studies Press, 2001.

Rita was stolen from her country as a child in the 1920’s and taken to a mission. Later she lived as a single mother in Brisbane in the 1960’s. This is a story about what it means to be Aboriginal, and a woman, in Australia

Pilkington, Doris, Follow the Rabbit-Proof Fence,University of Queensland Press, 1996.

Based on the experiences of three girls who in 1931 fled the repressive life of Moore River Mission and followed the rabbit-proof fence for hundreds of miles back to their homelands.

Aboriginal voices: activities and resources for English, DETE South Australia, 2000.

 

Contains an extensive list of life stories of Aboriginal people and lots of other annotated resource lists too in other chapters (poetry, plays, films, fiction media.)

Indigenous community members, those who fostered or adopted children, policy makers, administrators, and others have shared their individual experiences about the removal of children from their families. This publication, including a CD of excerpts from oral histories, will bring those stories to a wide audience and assist readers to understand the complex layers of this aspect of Australia’s story. Aboriginal history of several communities and individuals in South Australia

Gwynne, Phillip,Deadly Unna. Penguin Books, Australia, 1999.

 

The main character ‘Blacky’ tells us about small towns, (the story is set in South Australia) being part of the footy team, having a ‘Nunga’ (Aboriginal) friend on the team and growing up with an abusive father, all in a matter-of-fact, no fuss way. Combines humour, fine writing, tragedy and football.

Leah Purcell interviews nine Indigenous women about their lives. The beauty of Black Chicks Talking is the candid nature of the interviews. They carry the effect of minimum editing, which allows the character of each woman to shine through.

Charlie Perkins and university students took a bus to country NSW to counter racism and highlight issues like Aboriginal children not being allowed into swimming pools.

Coolbaroo Club, 1997, 54mins.

The story of a social club, established in Perth in the 1950’s and possibly the only place of its kind in Australia, where Aboriginal adults could meet to dance, sing and have supper away from stares and restrictions of the wider society. Re-enactments of evenings at the club and interviews, discussion of the permit system and exemption certificates applicable at the time.
