A complete resource containing information on the federal political scene after the 2001 election, including the state of the parties, the electoral system and a demographic profile of every House of Representatives and Senate constituency. A biography of each Member of Parliament provides an excellent resource for students. The almanac is updated after each general election.

Buckley, J, The Art of Governance – Putting the Pieces Together, A Curriculum Resource for Secondary Teachers, Global Education Centre, 2002.

A complete resource for teachers that contains background material, case studies, student activities and handouts ready for use in the school setting. A useful resource to develop the inquiry questions 3 and 4 of the Overview. Consists of three units:

Unit 1: What is governance?

Unit 2: Governance: Who is involved?

Unit 3: Different forms of governance

Coldrey, B.M., Australian Federal Politics for the Senior Student, Fourth Edition, Hargreen Publishing, Melbourne, 1984.

An excellent introduction to the Australian political system despite dated references. The chapter on voting and elections is particularly good. There are very good study and essay questions throughout the book. This text may be founfd in some libraries.

Graham, Morris, The Beginner’s Book of Australian Politics, Social Science Press, N.S.W., 1986.

A comprehensive guide to politics and power in Australia Most suitable for students.

Healey, J (ed) Issues in Australian Society, Spinney Press, Sydney, Australia

A series of texts that deal with current issues effecting Australia Material within the text consists of definitions, statistical data, newspaper articles, research pieces and an extensive bibliography. It can be used as a teacher and/or student resource.

Henderson, Paul, Parliament and Politics in Australia, Fifth Edition, Heinemann Educational, Melbourne, 1989.

An excellent textbook for teachers and senior students. Very good sections on general elections and pressure groups. Points for discussion, short answer questions and essay topics are clearly arranged at the end of each chapter.

Hirst, John, Australia’s Democracy – A short history, Discovering Democracy, 2002.

A review of the structures and processes of responsible government in South Australia since 1850. Mostly a teacher resource.

An historical analysis of South Australia’s first general election.

An excellent set of political definitions.

An introduction to Australian political systems for senior secondary students although the excellent sections on the Constitution and Federalism make this an invaluable resource for teachers.

Issues in Society, The Spinney Press.

A teacher and student resource with excellent up-to-date coverage of the Constitution, political parties, the federal system, parliament, Cabinet, and the electoral system. Included is a CD-ROM entitled Government, Business and Society, a resource that can be used in classrooms.

Solomon, David, Australia’s Government and Parliament, Nelson, Melbourne, 1976.

An old but still relevant study of representative, responsible and executive government in in Australia This text may be found in some libraries.

Wise, Rod, People, Power and Politics, Cambridge University Press, Victoria, 2000.

Focus: on political systems, leadership and citizenship (Victorian perspective on local government).

There are a vast number of television programs that could be useful when exploring specific aspects of the course including the following: ABC - The 7.30 Report, Lateline, Four Corners; Insiders, Channel 9 – Sunday, 60 Minutes; Channel 10 – Meet the Press; SBS – Dateline.
