Students who want to use a dictionary at the examinations must provide their own. SSABSA will not supply dictionaries.

The use of dictionaries at examinations is subject to the following provisions:

  • A dictionary may not contain any additional material that may provide information to help the student in the examination of the subject concerned.
  • The invigilator at the examination room has the authority to inspect any dictionary.

SSABSA allows students to use dictionaries at examinations, mainly to help them to understand the meaning of certain words that may appear in examination questions.

In languages examinations, students are permitted to use dictionaries that contain grammar sections.

Schools may prefer to provide dictionaries at the examination for students who require them, rather than face the task of inspecting students’ dictionaries at the beginning of each examination.

However, any student who has a dictionary not on the approved list may write to SSABSA by 29 June to seek written approval to use the dictionary at the examinations. In certain circumstances he or she may be asked to show a copy to SSABSA officers. If approval is granted, the student must take the letter of approval to each examination for the invigilator to check. A school that uses a dictionary other than those on the approved list may apply for blanket approval for students to use that dictionary.
