General Information

Panel members are drawn from a register of applicants whose expressions of interest have been accepted by SSABSA. Personnel on the register are contacted annually by SSABSA to determine their availability and to update details on their original application (if necessary).

Assessment panels are chosen by Chief Assessors, together with the relevant Curriculum and Assessment Officer, according to the prescribed criteria, giving particular consideration to country membership. Specialised roles may be asked of individuals within the panels to reflect the assessment requirements of the curriculum statement.

The composition of assessment panels will take into account:

  • continuity of experience from year to year;
  • new members;
  • representation from teachers, tertiary members, and industry;
  • representation of teachers from a range of schools with students differing socio-economic backgrounds;
  • appropriate balance of gender, educational sectors, and location of teaching school.

This is a valuable opportunity for professional development. The assessment panel positions carry a small stipend, or a reimbursement to employers when assessment panel duties occur in normal working hours.
