THE SACE LITERACY
STRATEGY
At its March 2004 meeting, the
SSABSA Board approved the introduction of a new SACE Literacy
Strategy. This followed extensive research and consultation
with the community and schools.
The purpose of the SACE
Literacy Strategy is to improve student proficiency across
a full range of literate practices appropriate to changing
social and technological times. The SACE Literacy Strategy
has implications for curriculum, assessment, teaching,
and learning.
Components
of the SACE Literacy Strategy
| The SACE Literacy Strategy has
four components: |
| 1. |
Literacy in the SACE is defined as the ability
to understand, analyse, critically respond to,
and create spoken, written, and visual communications,
and use information communication technologies,
in different contexts. |
| 2. |
Each Stage 1 and Stage 2 curriculum statement
contains learning outcomes, assessment components,
and criteria for judging performance that reflect
the SACE definition of literacy as appropriate
for each subject. |
| 3. |
Each Stage 1 and Stage 2 subject requires
students to develop a range of modes of communication
as appropriate for the learning context. |
| 4. |
Students must include 2 units from the subjects
listed below, as a requirement for SACE completion. |

Implications for SACE Completion - English Requirement
The year 2005
was the last year in which the English requirement — i.e.
2 units of English, English as a Second Language, or Communication
for the Hearing-impaired (at recorded achievement or better) — could
be satisfied only at Stage 1.
From 1 January 2006, students
have been able to complete this requirement with units from the
Stage 1 and/or Stage 2 subjects listed on the first page
of this information. Thus there is
still an English requirement for SACE completion, but
this can be satisfied at Stage 1 and/or Stage 2.
It is recommended that schools continue
to counsel students to enrol in Stage 1 English, ESL, or
Communication for the Hearing Impaired. The change to the
English requirement is intended to provide flexibility where
it is required.
NOTE on Stage 1 block status
for adult students: For adult
students seeking status for 12 units at Stage 1 block status includes 2 units of
Stage 1 English.
