Amendments to the Senior Secondary Assessment Board of SA Act 1983 (SSABSA Act) and Education Act 1972

In 2007, proposed changes to the SSABSA Act 1983 and amendments to the Education Act 1972 were the subject of public consultation. Following this, draft legislation was developed in consultation with stakeholders.

The Senior Secondary Assessment Board of South Australia (Review) Amendment Act 2007 was passed by both Houses of Parliament on 6 March 2008 and assented on 13 March 2008. This legislation will amend the SSABSA Act 1983 to modernise the governance arrangements under the Act and underpin the future South Australian Certificate of Education (SACE). It is intended that the changes to the SSABSA Act will come into operation on 1 July 2008  with the appointment of a new SACE Board.

The Education (Compulsory Education Age) Amendment Bill 2007 passed both Houses of Parliament in the week beginning 19 November 2007 and assented to on 12 December 2007. This Bill introduced a new Compulsory Education Age of 17 years which will come into effect from the start of 2009. Planning for these changes will be undertaken during 2008 to ensure a smooth transition for young people, their families, schools and the wider education and training community.
