Advertising or promoting a product

SSABSA’s online communities are designed for teachers to share information and ideas. While teachers may wish to inform colleagues of products, textbooks, or events that they have found useful, it is not for use by private companies, or individuals, to promote commercial gain.

Access and subscribing

Access to each group is restricted - new members must be approved by the group administrator. Once approved, a member will receive a welcome email and may need to reply to confirm their subscription.

These groups and their functions can be accessed either through the SSABSA Online Community list or the Learning Area pages (see notes below). More information can be found in the Mailman User Manual [pdf] or by sending a message with the word 'help' in the subject or body, to groupname-request@lists.ssabsa.sa.edu.au (e.g. ipp-teachers-request@lists.ssabsa.sa.edu.au).

To subscribe to a community click here.

Passwords

You must supply a password when joining a group. If you are subscribed from SSABSA, a random password will be allocated to you. This password can be changed later to one that is more easily remembered - see Changing Your Settings section below.

If you have forgotten your password, you can get it by either:

  • Going to the SSABSA Online Community list and clicking on your group. On this page look for the section marked 'Subscriber options' (near the bottom of the page). Enter your email address in the box beside the 'Unsubscribe or edit options' button then click on the button. On this page look for the 'Password reminder' section and click the 'Remind' button and your password will be emailed to you. If you do not receive the password reminder email check that you have typed your email address correctly and that the address you used is subscribed to that group.

or

  • Send an email to groupname-request@lists.ssabsa.sa.edu.au (e.g. ipp-teachers-request@lists.ssabsa.sa.edu.au) with the command 'password' (no quote marks). The Mailman software will email you with your password. Mailman commands can appear in either the body or the subject of the message. See section 3.2 of the Mailman User Manual for more information about sending email commands.

Changing Your Settings

To change your settings for a group, go to the web interface for that group. This interface can be accessed from the SSABSA Online Community list or the Learning Area pages. Once on this web page, log on using your group membership email address and password, then click the 'Unsubscribe or edit options' button. This will take you to the membership options page which allows you to change your settings including:

  • Email address
  • Name
  • Password - change to a password that is more easily remembered
  • Digest mode - digest gives you one daily email with all contributions for that day

Hint: Some options can be changed globally. If this box is checked, changes will affect all groups to which you are subscribed.

Frequently asked questions (FAQs)
about using discussion groups

How is it different to ordinary email? Once you have received a message from a group, using the reply button will send your message to everyone in the group. The important thing to understand is that when you send an email to a group you are writing to all your members not just the person whose point you're responding to.

What sort of messages should I be sending? It's probably a good idea not to send those polite little messages like 'thanks', 'ok' or 'hi, got your note' - because they all end up in everybody's inbox. If you really just want to write to one person, about something that isn't of any interest to the whole group, just send them a personal email, using their individual email address.
How can I tell if an email comes from a group? If you receive an email and the 'subject' line is prefaced by [group-name], then you know this is an email from the 'group-name' group and has been received by everyone in that group. Don't forget if you hit 'reply' then everyone in the group will receive your response.

Why do I need a password? The password will be useful if you later want to adjust the settings for your membership at your groups web interface - see Changing Your Settings section on this page.

Can I send an attachment? Yes, however there is a 40K limit. Larger files do take more time to download, but if you need to send a useful attachment, you should be ok. Please note that because the archive and digest is text based, attachments will not be viewable.
Will my Inbox be overflowing? Hopefully there will be plenty of vigorous discussion! But it is possible to receive your emails as a 'daily digest' (one email per day), taking up less room in your inbox - you can configure this by going to your group page and clicking 'Unsubscribe or edit options' - see 'Changing Your Settings' section opposite.
Why am I getting unintelligible characters in my emails? The software uses a text-based system which is display plain text. As a result, when digests and archived emails are viewed, any graphics or attached documents such as Microsoft Word may be shown as pages of unintelligible characters.

Please Note
1. Private groups can not be accessed from the SSABSA Online Community list.
2. Some groups do not allow settings to be changed.

3.

Settings can also be implemented by using email commands. More information about these commands and Mailman software can be found in the Mailman User Manual [pdf].
