Weathervane — sculpture, wood, and photographs

'This piece was inspired by Canunda National Park and its surrounding landscape. It focuses on patterns in nature and how the weather creates them. All materials used were found on the beach in Canunda National Park. The photographs depict locations near my home in the south-east.'

Dragon Dress — fabric, metal, and glass

'My ideas and inspiration for this dress came from my work in a theatre, as well as from my own imagination. I wanted to focus on my favourite animal, the dragon. My aim was to connect costume design and fashion design. I would like to see such a dress being worn as a common garment, not just as formal wear.'

AUSTIN, Stuart

Venom — pencil, pastel, pen, paint, computer graphics, airbrush, and letterprint

'This piece represents an advertisement for a computer game set in the future, along with its packaging. The vehicle shown is the main feature of the game; it is called a Venom — hence the title of the game. The advertisement was rendered by hand, and the packaging was created using various computer programs.'

open workAZAROVSKY, Stan

Art Practical (2 units)

Untitled — acrylic paint on board

'I always have trouble writing these statements as I never have a meaning or message in my work. I painted the image because I like cityscapes, rather than to express a feeling or make a statement. Every panel of colour was masked out with tape and painted with a ruler.'

open workBAIN, Emily

Sand Fight — oil and acrylic on canvas

'This work was influenced by my love of water, the beach, and summer. I emphasised the colours in this work because of my affiliation with bright and bold colours.'

open workBARKER, Seth

Art Practical (2 units)

Two Faced/Abstract Woman — acrylic gouache on canvas/acrylic gouache and professional gel medium on canvas

'Two Faced depicts how there are many people in today's society who are two-faced and will do anything to get to the front of the line — they lie, scheme, and backstab. It also shows how some people are the opposite, yet I depicted few of these. Abstract Woman shows the beauty or tragedy of the world. How far will society go in the future for looks? Plastic surgery such as nose jobs, eye lifts, and collagen injections — what does the future hold? Will the fight for beauty create an ugly society?'

open workBARKER, Seth

Craft Practical (2 units)

Chair with Colour-filled Bird Engravings — recycled timber, wrought iron brackets, and wood filler

'I made this chair from recycled timber and old wrought iron brackets to protest against the throwaway society we live in. I felt that the second-hand materials would give the chair a rustic feel to complement the bird engravings, which I crafted from some of my pen sketches. These sketches accompany the chair.'

open workBARNES, Katherine

Has Been — solar prints

'This work is concerned with the architectural features of aged houses. Though many of these houses are being demolished to make way for modern town houses or apartments, they have their own beauty. They may be "has beens", but they are a part of our city.'

open workBARRY-KEEN, Jasmin

Inheritance — plaster of Paris, mounting card, oil, and paint

'The corset is undeniably a symptom and symbol of female oppression. I used this sinister-looking orthopaedic machine to capture the inequality between males and females that is evident to women in my family. Although this inequality has been inherited by the next generation of my family, the strength of both males and females should enable us to overcome this in the future.'

open workBECHERVAISE, Philippe

Untitled — coloured pencil

'Humans are very good at finding uses for newly discovered materials, but we are not as good at finding ways to sustain exhaustible resources. I have used these drawings to capture the misuse of many aspects of the earth.'

Coping with Kingston's Bullshit — pencil and ink

'This work is about all the things we had to cope with in Kingston. Each portrait reflects how people coped with the treatment they had to deal with, and how they felt.'

open workBERRY, Ali

The Girls — pencil

'I developed this sketch from photographs I took when Dad was doing sheep work. One particular photograph appealed to me. "The girls" were lined up perfectly in the race, each sheep displaying a unique expression. My favourite media — pencil and paper — were ideal for depicting the texture of the wool and wooden railing.'

Amour à Paris (Love in Paris) — board, mirror, OHP, and silver pen

'This piece represents the things I am passionate about — beauty, friends, love, Paris, and the French language. Because I am showing my passions in a physical state, this piece is a part of me.'

Butterflies — mixed media

'I created this artwork by choosing different and interesting butterfly wings and putting them together using mixed media. I believe I have made a unique and very colourful piece.'

open workBLAKE, Natasha

My Life — glass and copper foiling

'This is a copper-foiled piece — that is, it is constructed of pieces of coloured glass, which I joined together with copper foil using a soldering iron. The piece illustrates my life as a boarder in Adelaide, as both the country and city aspects of my life are shown. It is a piece that I thoroughly enjoyed making.'

open workBLANCHARD, Lauren

Visual Arts Studies

Battery Hen — three-dimensional mixed media including wire, sandpaper, and feathers

'This is a protest piece about the treatment of hens in battery cages. It is heavily textural, almost "scratchy", to convey the horrific nature of the life of a battery hen. The work began as a fairy tale book about battery hens before becoming a sculpture. Hence the sign, which is whimsical but has pathos as well.'

open workBLANCHARD, Lauren

Visual Arts Studies

Fashion Victim — three-dimensional mixed media including calico, straw, and wool

'This is a "sculptural dress" signifying the fact that many dogs have their tails docked for no reason other than fashion. Hence there are tails attached to the "fashion victim" dress.'

open workBRAZELL, Alex

Cool Banana — wire frame, plaster, and paint

'This banana could represent the saying "let your true colours shine". It could be expressive of the truth within us. It could contain a message about not judging people by their appearance. You are free to decide the meaning for yourself. To me, it is simply a creation of fun and craziness, a cool banana!'

BROWN, Emily

Design Practical (2 units)

Untitled — paint, computer-generated design, and fonts

'The company logo, business card, and letter that I designed are presented on a large black board. The brief, research, and idea generation for this practical accompany the presentation.'

open workBULLEN, Rachel

Visual Arts Studies

Kaleidoscope — pencil, watercolour, and paint

'When I began this piece, I knew I wanted to do something different from a traditional portrait, However, I also wanted to maintain the qualities that facial expressions can convey. I used single facial features to try to create a mood and, ultimately, a mixture of emotions that the viewer could tap into.'

open workBULLOCK, Esther

Visual Arts Studies

One — watercolour

'This work celebrates the joyful expression of love, life, and unity between man and woman, who are fused together and encircled by emanating figures of humanity. The human figures in the background represent a faceless collective who, with wonder and admiration, support the idealised lovers.'

open workCARTER, Shelly

Visual Arts Studies

Catharsis — mixed media including paint, collage, and digital imaging

'The word "catharsis" means the expression of emotion through art or drama. In this piece, I have tried to show two sides of a relationship. Being in love can be an incredible feeling, but feelings get hurt and hearts are broken.'

open workCARUSO, Glynis

Art Practical (1 unit)

I Love the Flower Girl — acrylic

'This work is inspired by my 1960s youth. The title comes from the words of a song by the Cowsills (released in 1967) called The Rain in the Park and Other Things. I wanted to capture what I felt about that time — bright optimistic colours, carefree hearts, fun, and an era when love was "in".'

open workCAVALLARO, Sara

Visual Arts Studies

Untitled — paint

'My piece is cubist in style, inspired by the great Picasso. It is contemporary and unique, which is what I aimed to achieve. I understand that not everyone can see the image of two faces, but this is the illusion that makes people feel a need to discover the painting behind the painting.'

open workCERNA, Philip

Cultural Identity — paint, clay, and pencil

'This sculpture_painting is a portrait of me with Filipino flower patterns. It visually commemorates that my cultural identity is Filipino. However, it also shows that I am proudly part of Australia. It portrays distinctly Australian features that reflect the identity of Australia.'

Apricot Walls — acrylic paint

'Jewellee Temple left her body on 20 April 2002. She was a lifelong friend and mentor; her memory is the inspiration for this work. It depicts memories of childhood, a summer party at her Nissen hut home, fun with bodies dancing between apricot walls. It is a celebration of Jewellee's life journey and an expression of my love for her.'

open workCLAYTON, Lauran

Untitled — glass mosaic

'I used the sea as my inspiration for this piece. I chose mosaic because I wanted to work in detail, and I chose the glass for its colour or texture.'

COATES, Sarah

Craft Practical (2 units)

Puzzle Jug — clay

'I wanted to create a wheel thrown vessel that was elegant and unique, but most importantly, functional. The puzzle jug would satisfy this. Its complicated design would challenge my throwing ability and my techniques. The fine Wedgwood-like hand-painted landscape designs would add a touch of elegance.'

open workCOLLIGAN, Kate

Visual Arts Studies

View from Aldinga — acrylic paint

'My aim was to create a representational seascape that captured the light, colour, and movement of the sky and ocean. The format itself has some impact and evokes the vastness of the subject.'

open workCOREY, Lee

Visual Arts Studies

Self-portrait — pencil, black texta, coloured pencil, and leaves

'This is a very personal piece, exposing private aspects of my life that I usually do not share with others. Creating it was a journey of self-discovery that gave me the opportunity to express who I think I am. Each frame portrays a key issue that makes me who I am, symbolised by my silhouette in the centre.'

Love-in-a-Mist — pastel

Broken Love — oil paint

'This piece was completed through experimentation. By trying different styles and media, and by using a different base to work on, I produced a piece of work which was totally different and which I had immense pleasure in creating. I encourage everyone to try something different once in a while.'

open workDEEGAN, Claire

Changing Shadows — pencil and paint

'I illustrated five pelicans on the beach at Black Point in a very unnatural stance, looking curious. The corrugated iron and photo collage of old shacks present the idea that these pelicans are under threat. The stainless steel and photo collage of holiday homes represent the end of the "Aussie" shack culture of simple holidays.'

Rodeo — oil paint

'This piece tells the story of the cowboy throughout history. The cowboy was first known as a wild ruffian, and then perceived by women as a romantic. The cowboy has become a national hero, symbolised by the statue. The modern cowboy can be seen competing in rodeos, the sport first established by cowboys themselves.'

Outback Lamp — metal work

'This is lamp is for casual entertaining. It is constructed from rustic materials found readily in the rural environment in which the idea for it was conceived. The design is based on Australian icons, including Ned Kelly, the Hills hoist, the Olympic torch, and the flag stand at Parliament House.'

open workDILLON, Laura

Shadow of Danceacrylic paint and metallic paint

'This piece reflects my passion for dance. The colours on the human-like figures represent pain, exhaustion, and disappointment. I named this piece after the black background, which represents the shadow of dance. Dancers live under the constant pressure of performance. Dance should be the feeling of freedom.'

Partnering for Peace — wax, PVC piping, and paint

'This work symbolises people from all over the world coming together and "Partnering for Peace". It also represents the uniting of all races and cultures. I believe that this is important for humankind, especially in the light of the circumstances we face in the world today.'

open workDIXON, Michelle

Untitled — pencil and pastel

'After my Dad's death, I viewed life more intensely than I did before. Art became a healing process during my grief. Around this time, a close relation was admitted to Glenside Hospital. I noticed that the patients were heavily medicated and their eyes appeared larger and vacant, and showed pain. I began to look for ways to express this in my art.'

Big Day Out — computer-generated design, digitally published

'This practical was inspired by my love of music. It was my way of showing what the Big Day Out music event is about: teenage authority. The fun and excitement are shown in the colours used. I was influenced in my design by an example in a poster book. I wanted to use computer generation and professional digital printing to create my final.'

FINLAY, Loni

Visual Arts Studies

Floating Shards — watercolour, pastel, pencil, and charcoal

'After being introduced to Dale Chihuly's glass work, I was inspired to produce this piece. I wanted to re-create the effect of flowing glass, water, and movement that is strongly evident in his work.'

open workFLAHERTY, Michael

Eternal Life — impasto, and clay on canvas

'My work displays the struggle for life. The people swimming are oblivious to the plastic covering the surface/freedom/life. They are all fighting for freedom, unaware that the only freedom is death. Only the businessman is drowning before discovering the truth — drowning in ignorance and prejudice.'

open workFOOTNER, Tessa

Visual Arts Studies

Spirit Still Burns — mixed media

'My piece is based on the idea that most trash was once a treasure and therefore always is in some way. The fabrics and jewellery are intended to illustrate what women were influenced by in the decade before 1920 and the decade after (e.g. Lillian Gish and Clara Bow). The self-portrait simulates an image of looking back through time.'

open workFRANCIS, Glen

Foreshore CD Layout — computer graphics

'This layout portrays the musical style of the band Foreshore. After generating ideas and hand-drawn sketches, I created my final piece using Adobe Photoshop. It contains the essential components of a good musical album layout — unique images, bright colours, interesting graphics, and original text.'

open workGALPIN, Ruth

Collage-Plus — fabric and machine embroidery

'Some people in my class were doing wonderful things with machine embroidery, and I wanted to do some too. I experimented with orange thread on dyed paper adhered to black cloth. I needed a lot of practice with the machine, but I just loved machining over fabric pieces — a different form of collage.'

Caliente

'This floor lamp is designed to suit any decor. It features a chrome-finished stand and red and white transparent and translucent plastic. The galvanised steel pieces that hold the shade together add to its contemporary appearance. This lamp will not only brighten a room, but also make a statement.'

open workGARD, Toby

Untitled — airbrush and markers

'The piece is a concept design for a multi-purpose emergency vehicle. It aims to combine innovative design with high functionality and practicality. The three major functions of the vehicle are emphasised in a technical manner. It was designed as a highly efficient and adaptable emergency utility.'

AJDNA — paint on cloth, and etched glass

'My sister and I are identical twins, so I started this piece by thinking about duplicity. This led me to examining DNA sequences, which I printed out as a large cloth print. After I had done this a few times, the image of two "faces" appeared on my cloth — hence the title of my work AJDNA (Alexandra and Justine DNA).'

Faces of Africa — collage and mixed media

'I started this piece by thinking about the tragedy in much of Africa. I was born in South Africa and spent my first 8 years there. I decided to experiment with, and investigate, patterns/textiles/body markings, and what emerged was a vibrant and colourful celebration of life in Africa — hence my main piece.'

The Beach House — wood veneer

'Veneer was the perfect material to use for this piece, because I wanted to make an aesthetically pleasing picture out of simple materials. The idea for it came from my love of Jeannie Baker's collages. The main skills I needed were a good eye for composition and an ability to construct the veneer artistically.'

What Hope for Refugees? — charcoal and white pastel

'Through no fault of her own, Myshka was forced into a refugee camp. For more than 70 years, she experienced injustice, and felt hurt and pain, but fought strongly for freedom. 'This piece is about the stunning new Japanese image. The multicoloured clothing and accessories create a uniquely modern style. I have portrayed two girls, showing the diversity of their fashion. HIBBLE, Jenna

Elemental Screen — wood, paper, and lacquer

I concentrated on the love between a fallen angel and a mortal woman.'

Life Is Not Always Red Wine and Roses; Sometimes It's Beer Cans and Barbed Wire — wire composition

Coppelia — chicken wire and varieties of cotton thread

'This piece is based on the classical ballet Coppelia in which a puppet comes to life.
