A Naked Scar - acrylic paint and pastel
'This painting exemplifies contrast and harmony, the two key elements
of design. It is developed from both art and design principles and
is thematically based upon a personal style. The use of negative
space, with the application of acrylics by rough brush strokes,
creates contrast with the smoothness of the human body.'

Gloria - clay, paint, wire, and tin-copper
'This piece represents teenagers who fall pregnant because the contraceptive
pill is only 99% effective. It is hoped that Gloria's experience
is not wasted: the message is the importance of using other contraceptive
methods along with the pill. The copper and orange flowers represent
other teenagers who have fallen pregnant, and the babies are their
babies.'

A Relaxation of Features - oil paint and oil sticks on canvas
'This work was inspired by two artists, one a painter (Jeffrey Smart),
the other an electronic musician (Moby). I have always been interested
in simple compositions because of their beauty rather than their
concept. I like to be able to look at a work without it constantly
demanding interpretation, and I hope that I have successfully achieved
this with my own work.'

Escape
- sculpture
'As the world enters the twenty-first century, we are confronted
with challenging and frightening issues such as crimes, wars, natural
disasters, and emotional disturbances in people (including depression
and suicide). Sometimes we need to escape these issues. However,
this is virtually impossible, resulting in frustration, isolation,
and anger.'

Untitled - acrylic on canvas and papier mâché
'I wanted to produce a piece that was both creative and visually
stimulating: something that would compel the viewer to take a second
glance, or to reach out and touch it. I created this piece by taking
a mould of a friend's torso and face, using plaster bandage. This
mould was then used to make a papier mâché cast, which
was then inserted into and attached to the canvas.'
BAINGER

Product/Industrial Design - Adobe and Illustrator
'Design is about thinking outside the square you live in, pushing
the present to the past, and the future to the present. I designed
two pieces that are nothing like what is available today. Smooth,
clean lines feature in an ergonomic design that leads to a more
user-friendly, practical, and aesthetically pleasing outcome.'
BARKER

Deception - acrylic paint and ink (from wood cut)
'There are two reasons why this piece is called Deception. First,
the tie can be seen to be merging into the form of a snake. Secondly,
the piece provides images of deception. Humankind's first experience
with deception was with the serpent in the Garden of Eden. This
piece is a reminder that we can be just as easily deceived by the
image of a man with a tie.'

Is There Anybody Out There? - acrylic on canvas
'Have you ever tried to imagine the soul of a lonely person? This
painting is a result of my personal experience with the emotion
of loneliness. It became a vehicle to express an abstract feeling
visually. Through this work, I hope to be able to connect those
who feel lonely, or have felt lonely.'

Raw Energy - CorelDRAW 9 and Photoshop
'This work consists of promotional material for the stage band Raw
Energy, including an advertisement, a program for the concert, and
table card numbers for the Big Band night. After scanning photographs
of instruments, I used Photoshop and imported the images to CorelDRAW
9 for manipulation.'

Desert
Moon - CorelDRAW 7 and Photoshop
'These wine labels are for the Desert Moon range. They reflect the
Australian landscape and the type of wine. They have been presented
on a flat sheet and on the wine bottles. The catalogue advertisement
features a photograph of each wine bottle, with the background of
an Australian desert.'

A Collection of Photography - photography and digital images
'This practical extension focuses on photography and the different
media that can be used to enhance and emphasise parts of photographs.
I experimented by applying paint to photographs; using Photoshop
to manipulate images, and also to enhance black and white images
by creating colour in areas that did not previously have colour;
and sewing and beading on to photographs.'

Beckett/Beatles Project - coloured texta
'These posters were used to promote a Year 12 drama production entitled
"The Beckett/Beatles Project". I used cartoon-like images
of the cover of the Beatles' Abbey Road album and depicted the hippy
culture with psychedelic images.'
BELLIFEMINI
Carla
Visual Arts Studies
Untitled - water-colour and airbrush
'This piece represents the past, present, and future, the growing
of our souls, and the process of becoming independent. It represents
times when we discover ourselves and times when we are stuck. It
also represents what we see ahead and the longing for peace within
ourselves. I believe we should take time out to soul-search, because
there is always more to discover about ourselves.'
BENNIE

Visual Arts Studies
Untitled - clay
'I have always liked the shape and appearance of fish, and they
inspired me to focus my first practical on them. I began by drawing
a variety of fish and seascapes; I then decided to add something
about myself (e.g. my face). Using clay, I shaped three different
facial expressions into the curving fish bodies to create three
floor sculptures.'

Visual Arts Studies
Reclamation - The End of Man - digital (graphic design)
'This image is an expression of my belief that humanity is leaving
reality behind in an attempt to escape into an artificial existence.
It also depicts the idea that the further we leave reality behind
the more artificial we become, and a concern that nature will retake
the world we leave behind.'
BESZ

Circle-based Car Design and Cutloose Website Development
- pencil, paper, and computer
'The first of my two practicals is experimentation with circles
in car design; the second is concerned with the development of graphic
elements for the Cutloose website. My work is heavily influenced
by the use of computers. However, in both practicals, the computer
has been used only as an extension of the ideas already created
using pencil and paper. Without either medium, the final solutions
would not have been as effective.'
BEVAN Jocelyn

Because I Have a Boring Face - pencil, paint, and collage
'The body has been a medium on which to create ever since humans
came out of the jungle. In modern times, body decoration is associated
with the deviant, although it once was a representation of growth.
I tried to portray the growing acceptance of the art. What better
way to display art than on a human canvas?'

Untitled - photography
'This piece is a collection of photographs of old rotting doors.
Although the images have similar features, they have been photographed
at different angles to emphasise their individuality. The use of
black and white film, and old timber frames, enhances the feeling
of decay.'

Untitled
- textured sheet-metal and wood
'Inspired by the subject of animals, this piece provides a soft,
subtle ambience. As the light shines through the symmetrical pattern
of small holes in the sail, the wooden base reflects a rich mahogany
glow. Both of these elements combine to add warmth to a modern interior.'

Egyptian Artwork Through the Ages - computer and multimedia

age of art, from the very beginning of the civilisation to its decline.
The examples show how Egyptian artwork looked and portray Egyptian
life as it once was.'

Breaking Out - sketchbook: charcoal, pastel, conté,
and pencil; three-dimensional work: clay (white) bandages, plaster,
mesh, and string
'In my practical extension, I tried to convey the contrasts between
the feelings of being limited/trapped/confined/ to those of feeling
free/boundless/. I examined "breaking out" in humans,
but also in nature. I used examples of mummies (humans), cocoons,
twigs, and an abstract baby trapped in a pod.'

Frog
Eyes - chalk pastel on black card
'In this work, I decided to focus on one aspect of my subject "frogs".
I focused on different eyes, looking at the colours and geometric
patterns they generated. By using Photoshop, I repeated the different
sets of eyes in grids to present the eyes with different filters/effects
on each.'
Visual
Arts Studies
Where Have the Frogs Gone? - chalk pastel on black painted
paper
'This work was inspired by a magazine article on the mysterious
disappearance of frogs. I challenged myself to portray the question
"Where have the frogs gone?". Inside the question mark
the frogs are clear and bright, to represent the frogs that are
left; outside the question mark the frogs are fading and swirling
away into nothing.'

Hope,
Depression, and Anger - Exposed! - fabric
'Throughout the struggles of Year 12, I knew that my peers were
concealing their emotions and keeping them close to their hearts,
as I was. This became my inspiration - to reveal the heart and show
it bravely being worn for all to see. Exposed!'

The Beauty of Entrapment - mixed media
'This work portrays the idea that through sexual exploitation the
female body has come to be seen as an instrument of pleasure. Sensuality
and sexuality meld and create a trap for themselves within society's
limitations and ideals.'

Seditio - pencil and photographic manipulation (digital)
'There are so few universal truths, suffering and dissension being
two that often co-exist. There is so much to say and yet there are
so few words to say it. When are we going to realise? When will
we understand? God help us, for we shall never be able to save ourselves.'

Untitled
- pastel and mixed media
'Experiments with paint and pastel provided interesting textures
and colours to reveal the form of the figures. The directional lines
of the dry pastel added interest to the curves of the body and gave
a more lively and dynamic quality to the overall work, rather than
a rendered tonal approach.'

The Beginning of Time - paint, lino prints with ink, and
various materials
'This work represents an evolution of ideas, beginning with the
expressive thoughts of a Year 5 student. Young audiences will appreciate
the simplistic illustrations and story line. I used various artistic
techniques to give the illustrations a three-dimensional effect.
Each lino print represents a key character.'

Path of Self-destruction - acrylic on board
'The concept of this painting was to explore the theme "caged
in". My intention was to do something personal that also gave
young people a message about heroin addiction. The figures at each
end represent heroin and the fact that it's a shadow that's always
there once you have started. The question mark is simply there to
provoke thought about the issue.'

Targeting
Gary Gait - oil paint applied with a palette knife
'Gary Gait is considered to be the best player ever in lacrosse.
He is definitely a threat to the defence, and their eyes are always
watching him. My aim was to incorporate a target of Gary Gait from
the viewpoint of a defender. I used a three-dimensional effect and
a white border.'

Surreal
Sea of Figures - wood, paint, ink, texta, coloured pencil,
and pen
'My idea was to create a giant wall hanging using rectangular pieces
of paper. I decided to use the human figure, and distortion, to
create a fantasy, almost surreal creature, not quite human. I was
particularly interested in the work of Max Ernst. I wanted the presentation
to be different, not flat on the wall. I wanted to see the works
all together, like a sea of artworks, crowded and busy.'
CHELLEW

Visual Arts Studies
Untitled
1 - oil paint
'This piece is a juxtaposition of two separate ideas. My backup
began with landscapes and cellos separately; it was not until later
that I decided to blend them together. The nature of the oil paints
helped me to achieve smooth blending of colour and freeness of line.'

Untitled 2 - chalk pastel and pencil

allowed me to be free in my style and expressive through lines and
tone.'

Kurt
Cobain - Artist of the Decade - lino block print
'My influence for this work was Kurt Cobain and his life. I used
several layers in the final product, included glass, perspex, paper,
and card, and reversed the image to obtain a different effect. The
different layers are intended to depict the depth of Kurt's emotional
response to the media.'

Fire and Ice - water-colour
'Tone can be extremely effective visually, and so I decided to produce
a piece that supported this idea. Water-colour was an excellent

of water-colour paper.'
COX

Art Practical (2 units)
Soul Position - pastel, paint, pencil, and ink
'I tried to imagine the soul of a soulless person. The soul is shown
caged. I used a water-based paint to create a background colour
and pastel over the top to give a soft and slightly detailed effect
for the soul. Pencil and ink were used to depict the human. I wrote
poetry to accompany my picture.'
CRAIG

Design Practical (2 units)
Digital Photography - computer graphics
'This is an experimental piece combining and/or manipulating simple
digital images or photographs to produce a scene that did not previously
exist. This work indicates the power of technology and the ability
to manipulate photographs to provide inaccurate information. Most
of the pictures are digital photographic montages and some are simple
experiments with software filters.'

Magic
Garden - quilted wall hanging and colour wash
'The colours begin from the centre of the quilt, and range from
light to dark. I arranged the squares in each corner so that they

When viewed from a distance, the quilt looks like a magic garden.'

Pinnacle Apartments Project - computer
'These three pieces of work show different aspects of my building
design. The poster features a three-dimensional view of the apartment
building that allows clients to see how it will look when built.
The side view of the building shows the different levels of the
building. The third piece shows the floor plans.'

Battery Hens - pencil and pastel
'I easily found inspiration and ideas for this piece. For a long
time I have felt very strongly about the inhumanity surrounding
the issue of battery hens. This piece is meant to raise awareness
and allow me to express my feelings on this issue.'

Adam and Eve - Mount Gambier limestone
'This is a semi-abstract representation of Adam and Eve. The use
of a harsh, porous material and extreme negative spaces contrasts
with the realistic and soft qualities previously depicted in art.
I used different sized chisels and rasps, as well as an electric
sander, to create the desired form and finished product.'

A Lady's Face - mixed media
'As part of my practical extension, I chose to work with a picture
of a lady's face. By using different media and techniques, I reproduced
the lady's face in many different ways. I enjoyed this project because
the lady's face looked different each time. It reflected the different
layers that make a person unique.'

Death
on Road - acrylic and enamel paint, chipboard, and metal
'This piece captures what happens to people's lives when there is
a death in a car crash. I wanted to show that when people have a
car crash, it is not just those people who get hurt. The signs represent
the experiences of the people who are involved in the crash and
the experiences of the people who know them.'

The
Game of Life - pencil, clay, and wood
'This piece is a social and political statement about the world
and the way in which people function in it. The pictures on the
board represent a reality of horror and pain, which many innocent
people experience. Towering over them, simply playing a game, are
the chess pieces displaying faces of "evil". These are
intended to make us all consider our own actions.'

Untitled
- clay, wire, and plaster bandage
'These three faceless sculptures represent entrapment, entanglement,
and our conscience. These thoughts and mind processes are shown
externally. The cage symbolically represents entrapment. The vine
surrounding the second figure portrays entanglement. The small figure
on the back of the largest figure depicts our conscience.'

Effervescent - acrylic on board, and gouache on sheet-metal
'My work signifies a boldness in relation to colour. I took a leaf
in water and created something abstract. I particularly chose to
use sheet-metal to echo the texture of the water and bubbles throughout
the entire piece. I feel it represents a sense of excitement.'

Breakfast
at Robyn's - acrylic paint on canvas
'My painting was inspired by my love for still-life composition.
I created this painting with the impressionist technique of light

of contrasting warm and cool colours. My aim was to keep the paint
luminous and alive for the eye.'

Year 12 Study Calendar - water-colour pencil
'My piece is a study calendar for Year 12 in cartoon style. There
is a lot of pressure in Year 12, and people are focused on their
work and future. I decided to take a lighthearted view and add some
humour to what is a very serious year for most people.'

Daily Dilemma - pencil on paper, and perspex
'This piece is about the thoughts and feelings we have about ourselves
- our self-image. Specifically, it relates to my own "daily

of myself. The dairy pages in the perspex screen reflect my thoughts
last year as I recovered from anorexia.'

See the Soul - mixed media (metals) and paint on board
'I worked from the quotation "the eyes are the key to the soul",
with the key and shadowed figure representing the person's soul.
No two eyes are the same: they represent individuality. The protruding
eyelashes illustrate how we keep others at arm's length. The square
net and fine mesh around the pupils are the barriers we sometimes
erect around ourselves.'

Often we came home exhausted, and my dad would fall asleep in his

'Good and Evil; Light and Darkness; Triumph and Defeat. My work
is an attempt to personify these clashing concepts in a portrayal
of the fallen archangel Lucifer. Their swirling fight is centred
above our own temporal planet, just as the battle of good and evil
is fought every day in our world.'

Untitled - computer-generated art, airbrushing
'These three pieces are movie posters for a three-part Star Trek
spin-off. The characters were all hand-drawn, and then scanned into
a computer. I added colour in Photoshop and used gradients and airbrushing.'

Faces - powder paint and turpentine, charcoal, and graphite
pencil
'This work is my backup folder of portraits in charcoal and pastel.
The final pieces are drawn in charcoal and graphite on a base of
powder paint. I wanted to achieve a striking effect by using bold
colours and strong facial features.'

Sushi Ya - cardboard, foam, bamboo, and plastic
'The brief was to design a stall for a vendor in the Lakes Village

a Japanese sushi bar and designed it so that it enhanced the international

Form
and Beauty - oil
'I have always been intrigued by my mother's white lilies. I wanted
to depict the unique form and beauty of the arum lily in my final
piece. The elongated compositions were influenced by the work of
Georgia O'Keefe, and the frame reflects an interest in Japanese
design I developed through my other practical.'

Untitled
- paint
'This work is based on a poem by George MacDonald that symbolises
hope. The first painting, depicting threatening clouds and their
reflection on the land, shows an impending storm - a sign of troubled
times. The second painting depicts a sunset, signifying hope and
an end to recent trials and tribulations.'

Triptych of a Lone Figure - oil paint on canvas
'This triptych is about a loner - an outsider. With colour leeching
out of the scene, each panel represents a different facet of his
personality.'

Broken Societies - paint on canvas
'There is a beginning and an end to everything that is alive. In
between is a life time. This painting is a reflection of the destruction
and poverty in societies today. Poor, underprivileged people continue
to live horrible life times, without basic human rights, life times
we in more wealthy societies never experience.'

Negative
North - computer-aided design using Freehand and Adobe Photoshop
'For my second practical of Year 12, I wanted to design a nightclub
poster, as I have always admired the type of design of such advertisements.
"Negative North" is an underground nightclub that plays
a variety of electronic music. The poster consists of hand drawings
and elements created using design software.'

Balance - water-soluble crayons and colour pencil
'This piece demonstrates the five elements that are part of the
earth's natural processes: Fire, Earth, Metal, Water, and Wood (in
that order). I drew a picture to illustrate the characteristics
of each element. The piece also symbolises the balance of life and
my star sign, Libra, and so has personal meaning as well.'
