The
SSABSA Art Show 2001 was presented by the Senior Secondary Assessment
Board of South Australia with the support of Department of Education,
Training and Employment schools, Independent schools, and Catholic
schools. It was held at the Light Square Gallery, AIT ARTS, 39
Light Square, Adelaide from 4 May to13 June 2001.
During
the final moderation procedure in 2000, a large number of works
were identified and subsequently delivered for exhibition.
The SSABSA Art Show is both a display of pieces of artistic merit
and an educational exhibition of the SSABSA Year 12 courses in
school-assessed art, craft, and design, and in publicly examined
art, including design.
It was with this dual purpose in mind that the SSABSA moderators
identified the practical works, investigative studies, methods
and materials folios, practical extensions, and student choice
topics on display.
One of the selection criteria used by the moderators was that
the works should fulfil the requirements of the various Year 12
syllabuses. In other words, the work has not been produced just
for the purpose of exhibition. The practical works should:
Works produced at a low cost were equally considered for inclusion.
The investigative studies represent a range of options, approaches,
and personal contributions. The methods and materials folios and
practical extensions demonstrate students' skill development in
design. The student choice topics have been included to demonstrate
the breadth and depth of research undertaken, and the quality
of findings, conclusions, and personal opinions contained within
the presentations.
Although there was some truly outstanding work on display, it
should be understood that this was not an exhibition of the best
work presented for assessment purposes.
One of the special purposes of the SSABSA Art Show is to enable
current students and their teachers to see the ways in which former
students have interpreted the syllabuses.
Many of the students have been invited to lend their work for
one year for public display in SSABSA's offices or in the offices
of the Minister for Education and Children's Services.
We sincerely thank everyone involved in the staging of this annual
event. In particular, we express our gratitude to the exhibitors
for their participation, generosity, and willingness to have their
works viewed by members of the wider community. The work reflects
in a visual way the sensitivity, creativity, and confidence of
a generation of art students of whom we can be proud.
